[ARCHIVED] Exciting things are coming to Mound House!

Mound House aerial

Starting December 8, the Mound House museum will temporarily close until December 26 as we make way for an exciting new addition: the Artifact Preservation Center!
Why is this such a big deal? Cataloging and inventorying our collection is essential to preserving the history of Fort Myers Beach and Southwest Florida. The Artifact Preservation Center allows us to:
- Organize and protect artifacts and archives for future generations.
- Offer new opportunities for research into the island’s rich history.
- Expand behind-the-scenes experiences for students, interns, and visitors.
This new space will help unlock more stories from the past and open up exciting ways for everyone to connect with archaeology, history, and the environment.
While the Digging Deeper exhibit will make way for this transformation, we’re not saying goodbye! Visitor-favorite elements like kiosks and hands-on activities will be relocated to other exhibits, ensuring they remain part of your Mound House experience.
The temporary closure from December 8–25 will also give us time to complete important maintenance and ensure that your visits are as enriching as possible when we reopen. During the museum temporary closure, the grounds will remain open with their normal times and we will still offer our guided Eco-Kayak Tours!
Thank you for your patience as we take this important step toward preserving and sharing our collective history. We can’t wait to show you what’s next!
